Update 8/01/2017: I added a version that works properly for Mac users. Huge thanks to Criquette for testing

I’ve always liked the pond water from Castaway Stories, I consider it as the best and the most realistic in the whole Sims series. Compared to that the default pond water in TS2 looks quite terrible with its unnatural intense blue colour and no water reflections at all. A solution to that was Moi’s Water Mod Series replacing the pond water with pool water, but it wasn’t perfect either, it was too blue and too transparent, with too subtle reflections.
The other thing I like about CS is that the sea water visible from non-beach lots looks nice and no different to beach ones, while in TS2 it’s not even water, just a weird solid blue surface with some transparency. Ocean water visible from beach lots wasn’t bad in TS2, but it seemed too transparent, which made it seem a bit artificial. And while the water in the neighbourhood view was essentially fine, it wasn’t really what I wanted.

To solve those problems described above I edited Maxis shaders so I finally have properly looking water in all places, with animations and reflections. The shaders are from CS, modified by me so they work properly and look nice in TS2 (just the copy-paste method didn’t work, crazy things happened when I did that, but after working on those shaders for a while everything seems fine now). So, what does this mod actually do?
  • I changed the ocean water visible from beach lots so the water seems less transparent depending on the camera angle (I think I managed to show that well in the pictures), and doesn’t have blue tint so its colour depends on the sky colour and other things it reflects. For some reason the beach lot ocean water works different to any other water and it keeps the blue sky colour when it’s raining and snowing.
  • The pond water is completely different to the default one, and similar to the ocean one, but it changes its colour with weather, and I made it act like lake water would instead of crazily waving like sea water. Needs a pool on the lot to work properly.
  • The sea water visible from non-beach lots is similar to it too – animated and with reflections. Needs a pool on the lot to work properly.
  • The sea water in the neighbourhood view is changed too to the wavy one, so it has a more natural look.
  • This mod replaces Maxis shaders with the instances 0xFF1AFA1C and 0xFF3A262A, and the group 0x1C0532FA.

I mentioned that the pond water and sea water for non-beach lots needs a pool on the lot to work properly. It doesn’t mean that it will make the universe to implode if you don’t place one, but the water will be black, without reflections. The pond needs two 1x1 pools in its opposite ‘corners’ (with only one the reflections will sometimes act a bit strange), for the sea water one will be enough, but sadly, the reflections will sometimes act weird, because sea can’t be surrounded by a pool like a pond can. I showed in the pictures how to place the pool properly and how to hide it, and an example of a strange reflection on the sea water.

Conflicts:
Anything that modifies those shaders I mentioned; the only mods I can think of are Moi’s Water Mod Series.
Edit: Another conflict is this mod (info by nuidyaforever).
• Edit: A new version of that mod includes mine and can be downloaded here. Thanks!
Edit: This mod will conflict with mine as well (info by cheezypuff121P).

Known Bugs:
  • The pond water and the sea water visible from non-beach lots is black without a pool on the lot. This is obviously solved by placing a pool.
  • The sea water visible from non-beach lots will sometimes have strange reflections, depending on the camera angle and movement. On the pond water this can be solved by placing a pool in a special way (shown in the pictures), but sadly, that’s impossible with the sea water.

I have a question to @raynuss and other people who mentioned that the pond water in the neighbourhood view is invisible – does it look like this? Because I can’t tell if it is invisible or just fine, as it looks very similar to what I saw with Moi’s mod and it looks just normal to me.

As for Mac users – could you send me the file materials.package located in the MG folder\TSData\Res\Materials? I’d take a look at those shaders and try to fix my mod so it’d work for Mac users too, but I need the Maxis shaders used in the Mac version for that.

Edit: I did another test regarding invisible pond water:
  1. I created a pond, but without adding 1x1 pools, so the water was black on the lot.
  2. I saved the lot and loaded the neighbourhood, this was the pond water, which definitely looked broken.
  3. I loaded the lot, added the 1x1 pools, saved and loaded the neighbourhood again.
  4. The water changed to this.
Not sure if it is any help, I’d like to hear some info from people who said the water looks invisible for them.

Will this mod work with the 'Enigmatic Waters' mod?

I haven’t heard about that mod, but if it modifies the same shaders as my mod then it’ll conflict with mine.

Edit: I found Enigmatic Waters, it’s actually not a mod, but decorative objects that have nothing to do with water shaders, so it won’t conflict with my mod

I must say that this mod is awesome. It's beautiful..and so many other adjectives that can't describe the lovely effects it creates in the game.

I've heard about this mod on tumblr (pro's and con's). The pictures I've seen are absolutely beautiful. I've been contemplating as to whether or not to try it out. Having to add 1x1 pools on each lot gives me pause ... I was also wondering if this mod allows fish to be seen in the pond and in the fish tank? I use this "fishwithoutshaders" here: http://modthesims.info/d/481859 - would this conflict with your mod?

I use that mod and it works perfectly with Voeille's, at least in my game.

I love this, but I was wondering...is it possible to make the actual pool shader look like the pond water? The best thing about castaway was the actual swimmable lakes and I know we can fake those, but it would be super neat if we could make at least fake functional ponds out of pools that use that water shader.

Hi there!

I seem to have some change with this mod, but I can't get it to work right. The neighbourhood water looks great. But when I went onto a lot with a pond, the water was black, no reflections, a little wavy looking though. I added the pool tiles as directed and no real change - it lightened around the edges of the pond a little but still black. I used the boolprop UseShaders true cheat and it put fish in my pond (for the first time ever, LOL!) but the water itself looks exactly the same.

I'm tempted to use your graphics.sgr file to see if that helps but I am already using a modified graphics.sgr to allow me to play the UC in a different resolution on Windows 10! So I don't want to overwrite those modifications. I'm not sure what else I can do! Reflections are on BTW.

Some of my ponds are too close to the edge of the lot to allow pool tiles to be placed on opposite sides of the pond. Since this situation forced me to experiment, I discovered that the pool tiles don't have to go on opposite sides of the pond to fix the reflections. They can be on adjacent sides of the pond and seem to work just fine (at least in my game). As long as both pool tiles are not on the same side of the pond, the reflections seem to work okay.

I thought somebody might find this helpful.

@kayleigh83: My GraphicRules.sgr also fixes resolution problems, so I can play with my default screen resolution 1920x1080 Make a backup of your file and try mine, maybe it’ll help.
@RoxEllen1965: I checked in my game and the reflections aren’t proper with pools like that. Test it with various camera angles and movements and you’ll see that they act weirdly, like moving with your camera so they reflect something that isn’t there and shouldn’t be reflected at all. The pools must be placed so they create a rectangle and the pond is inside that rectangle – otherwise the reflections will be wrong on the area that isn’t inside the rectangle. To explain it well I’ll use pictures:

The reflections will be fine in the part of the pond that is inside the rectangle, but wrong elsewhere:

The reflections look seemingly fine here:

But if you mess around with the camera angle they will move along with it, and here is an example – I kept moving the camera and the reflections moved as well, and they moved so much that now the pond only reflects the sky instead of the tree (the tree reflection moved up so it’s not on the pond any more):

I was wary of downloading this at first, despite how incredibly fantastic it looks, because I felt like needing to place pools near a lake would disrupt my lots. But now I find myself thinking up the most clever ways to cover pools with trees and plants and rocks, and I'm realising that the slight inconvenience of placing tiny pools is so incredibly worth it for how beautiful this mod makes the game look. Thanks so much!

Ah okay, thanks for the detailed explanation. I must have just gotten it right a couple of times by accident. This is a new area for me and I'm still exploring.

I am in LOVE with this. this is GORGEOUS, thank you SO much!

I was curious though, does this cause immense lag? I downloaded a really tall apartment, and I noticed that when the camera is facing the pond right next to it, it gets laggy. However if I face away from the pond, the FPS is fine. ALSO though, when it IS facing the water, it's also facing mirrors. So I don't know if the cause of the lag is the water or the mirrors. I think it might just be because it's such a tall apartment though. (Even though my PC is immensely powerful)

Example:
No lag

Lot's of lag:

I think it's just the combination of the height AND the water actually.
But even if it is, you did SUCH a good job! It's so pretty, hats down fe' ye! And there I was thinking that the water from TS3 couldn't get any better.

Thank you so much for this mod! I don't know if it has already been mentioned here, but having Targa's Pond Water mod alongside Voeille's produces issues. I am mentioning this because I honestly forgot I had it, and I noticed that the neighborhood water was working but the pond water was not showing up as anything other than the normal Maxis blue (I had already removed niol's water mods and adding pool squares didn't change anything). After removing Targa's mod, the pond water looks like a dream! So if anyone else is having a similar issue, check to see if you have that mod.

edit: I also just wanted to add that it makes perfect sense that the two mods conflict, since they both affect pond water. My comment was just to help other downloaders who might run across that issue.

@AuzzPanda: It doesn’t cause huge lag itself, but it surely has an influence on performance.
@cheezypuff121P: Thanks for the info, I’ll add it to the conflicts list.
@FracturedMoonlight: I forgot to mention (sorry) – it is technically possible, but could be complicated considering that the pool water reacts to sims jumping into it.

Hi
I am the creator of This Post Effect MOD.
As nuidyaforever of information, this MOD will conflict with your MOD.
And so, I have a favor to ask you.
May I merge my MOD with your MOD and distribute it?
I confirmed that it works properly as I checked by myself.
